about

This album is the result of experimentation and exploration of feedback, recorded in 2004. While most occurrences may seem novel, a dedicated consideration may reveal subtle textures, nuances, and unintended "creatures" that arise through the complex interaction of electronics, physical space and performer. Examination of the performance identifies multiple feedback loops, changing and modifying the performance system

1 - The feedback of the signal generator (guitar) > amplification > speaker > space > guitar - a positive feedback loop, tending towards open oscillation
2 - The feedback of performer > instrument (guitar + amplification) > performer - a negative feedback loop, modifying and limiting the otherwise open oscillations of the positive feedback loop

This negative feedback loop is of particular interest, as it is the mode of expression of the performer. Also of note, a peculiar effect was noticed after listening back to the recordings - the influence of the room, especially of the movements of the performer through the sound space between the microphone and amplifier. No effects were used in post production of this recording.

Enjoy, and remember, it is just Feedback.

From The Principia Cybernetica:

"In a system where a transformation occurs, there are inputs and outputs. The inputs are the result of the environment's influence on the system, and the outputs are the influence of the system on the environment. Input and output are separated by a duration of time, as in before and after, or past and present.

In every feedback loop, as the name suggests, information about the result of a transformation or an action is sent back to the input of the system in the form of input data. If these new data facilitate and accelerate the transformation in the same direction as the preceding results, they are positive feedback - their effects are cumulative. If the new data produce a result in the opposite direction to previous results, they are negative feedback - their effects stabilize the system. In the first case there is exponential growth or decline; in the second there is maintenance of the equilibrium."
